When my husband was in the Navy, he was a Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor. One of the things he did was talk to people in the crew of the ship he was on about drug and alcohol abuse and scheduled treatment for those who needed it. One of the hardest things to do was to get the people to understand their problem. Most drug or alcohol abusers were in denial he said. One of the most effective treatments was to send abusers to an inpatient treatment centers, a place where they can get real professional care. Being an advisor, he could only do so much, but real progress can be made if the patient is at a place that understands and cares for their needs, one that can more effective provide the support their need to free themselves from drugs or alcohol.
