1. How long have they been a contractor?

Your first order of business should to find out the history of all the contractors you are considering. You should not simply hire the first contractor that you see listed in the phone book. This would be a recipe for disaster. You need to have a good sense of who a person is before you let them into your home. Find out how long the person has been working in the contracting business. This will give you a good idea about their level of experience.

2. Previous work

What has the contractor worked on before? You would be wise to visit some of the homes that a contractor has worked on previously before you hire that person. The only way to be totally sure that the person’s work is not substandard is to see it for yourself. All reputable contractors should not have any problems giving you several references that you can look at. If they do not provide any previous work for you to examine, do not hire that person. This is something that far too many people do not stop to consider. You must verify that a valid insurance policy is covering any person you let into your home to do some work. There is the possibility that the contractor could break one or your possessions or otherwise destroy part of your home during the time that they are there. If they have insurance, the damage done to your home will be paid for. However, things will become much more complicated if damage occurs and the contractor is not covered by insurance.
