Designing a More Environmentally Friendly Kitchen

Concern for the health of the environment is not a new concept, but it is one that is taking hold when it comes to remodeling existing homes. Below are a few ideas for adding a few environmentally friendly features to your kitchen space.

Incorporate Natural Lighting

Natural lighting is healthier and uses less electricity than artificial lighting. Consider adding skylights, when possible and adding wider windows. LED lighting uses less energy and provides better light, if it is not possible to increase natural lighting in your kitchen space.

Create Better Air Ventilation

Indoor air is considered to be twice as polluted as outside air. It is essential to find ways to bring fresh air into your kitchen. Incorporate some type of ventilation system that will offer a good air exchange when updating your kitchen.

Use Energy Star Appliances

Energy Star appliances have been tested and rated to use much less energy than other contemporary models. Saving energy is one of the best ways to help the environment. Energy Star rated appliances come in many styles and run as efficiently and powerfully as any other.

Avoid Stains, Paints and Products That Emit Toxins

Cupboards, countertops and flooring can all be coated or created with products that emit toxic substances, such as formaldehyde. Seek out products that are environmentally friendly and will not push out toxic substances that can be harmful to you, your family and pets.

Avoid Building a Kitchen Island

Rather than having a kitchen island built, try taking an old stand or dresser and place it on rollers. You can cover it with cutting board material and have the perfect kitchen island. It saves an older piece of furniture from ending up in the landfill. You will get the extra counter space and storage you need and feel great about it.

Re-purpose As many Items As Possible

Why buy brand new decor from the store when you can find used items for re-purposing? You can have a lot of fun exploring flea markets and thrift stores to find the right items for storage or decoration. You might even be fortunate enough to find older copper-bottom pans with original patina. It will be an attractive display item that your friends and family will love.

Double Deck Bed For The Kids Bedroom In The Future

My friend resigned from her work to focus on dealing furniture and fixtures. Her boyfriend is an architect and he will do designs for home cabinets, wood couches, tables, and bed frames made out of woods. Recently my supervisor is looking for bed frame and I introduced my friend’s boyfriend designs and stuffs. She wanted to have the double size bed, my friend sent me a photo and I thought it was the exact sample I asked from her but it’s not. She said she just wanted to show me the headboard.

The moment I saw the bed frame in my messenger, I exclaimed this would fit for the kids bedroom in the future. Yeah I need to build one for them.  I am now starting with our laundry area. One of the projects that I need to do this year, I am fulfilling it because I started withdrawing my savings in the bank because I always run short.
